Chanu has identified herself as a Sanamahism follower, but has also stated that she worships Hindu deities in addition. At the age of twelve, her family recognized her strength. When her elder brother struggled to lift a large bundle of firewood home, she was able to carry it easily.
Mirabai attended the Sports Academy in Manipur. Her transportation was provided by truck drivers carrying sand. When she won the Olympic medal, she invited the truck drivers to give her gratitude and touched their feet in a gesture of respect.
