In the year 1993, Srikanth Nammalwar Kidambi was born in Ravulapalem, Andhra Pradesh, India. He is a member of a Telugu middle-class family. Kidambi’s father, KVS Krishna, is a landlord, and his mother, Radha, is a housewife. In addition to his elder brother, he was raised alongside his younger brother, K. Nandagopal, who is a badminton player and a national junior champion. Srikanth used to live in the same house until 2008, when he moved to Gopichand Academy in order to ensure that he would be able to represent India at the international level.

Srikanth Kidambi began his tennis career at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, where he won bronze in doubles and silver in mixed doubles. In 2012, he defeated Malaysian junior world champion Zulfadil Zulkiffli in the Maldives International Challenge to win the men’s singles title. Kidambi is one of the greatest badminton players India has ever produced. He won the men’s singles title at the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold event in 2013, defeating the world number 8 and local favorite Boonsak Ponsana in straight sets.
Kidambi won his first senior national championship in Delhi by defeating reigning champion and Olympian Parupalli Kashyap. In 2014, he finished as runner-up at the India Open Grand Prix in Lucknow.
In the following year, he competed in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow and reached the semi-finals of the mixed team events. At the China Open Super Series Premier in November 2014, he defeated 5-time world champion and 2-time Olympic champion Lin Dan in straight games (21-19, 21-17).
He then defeated Kento Momota (15-21, 21-16, 21-10) and Tommy Sugiarto (21-18, 21-13) in the group stage of the prestigious BWF Super Series Masters Finals, where he lost to Chen Long of China. Srikanth became the first Indian male to win a gold medal at the 2015 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold in 2015.
Kidambi and Sai Praneeth made badminton history in 2017 when they became the first Indian pair to qualify for the finals of a ranking event. Both Srikanth and Praneeth hail from the same state, Hyderabad, and are coached by Pullela Gopichand. It was the first time an Indian male player had won the Indonesia Super Series.
In 2018, he had greater success at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. In the mixed events, he won a gold medal and in the singles, he won a silver medal. During the same period, he achieved the No. 1 position for a week. His performance at the 2018 Asian Games was disappointing, as he lost both the singles and mixed events.
